GUWAHATI, Feb 3 - Assam crawled to 223 for eight on the opening day of the five-day Ranji Trophy quarterfinal match against Punjab at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium at Valsad in Gujarat today.
Being put into bat, Assam were in trouble from the initial stage losing opener Rahul Hazarika (12) with the team’s total of 44. Skipper Gokul Sharma (20) tried to repair the early damage by stitching in with a 40-run partnership with the other opener Pallav Das.
But after Pallav’s departure, Assam lost three quick wickets at 115. However, J Syed Mohammad (50 not out) stood firm and helped in crossing the 200 mark by building partnerships with Amit Verma (42), Tarjinder Singh (13) and Amit Sinha (13). Syed Mohammad faced 142 balls and hit six boundaries during his knock.
Medium pacer Siddarth Kaul was Punjab’s leading wicket taker with four wickets to his kitty while Barinder Balbirsingh Sran took two wickets. Harbhajan Singh and Deepak Narinder Bansal scalped one wicket each.
