GUWAHATI, Feb 3 - The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has derecognised the basketball event of the South Asian Games (SAG) to be held in Guwahati and Shillong from Friday.
Basketball championship of the SAG is scheduled to be held at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in the Sarusajai Sports Complex here from February 9 to 12.
According to the sources, FIBA has requested all the participating nations to refrain from sending their national teams for the basketball event.
The international basketball body also wrote to the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) for derecognising the championship.
The governing body has said that in view of “unacceptable interference by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in the affairs of the Basketball Federation of India, FIBA is unable to recognise and endorse the basketball competitions of the South-Asian Games”.
The letter adds that despite the several correspondences issued by FIBA to relevant authorities in India including the IOA as well as the State authorities failed to give due recognition to BFI.
It states that “the IOA has granted an Ad-hoc Committee the authority to select the Indian national teams due to participate in this event is complete violation of FIBA’s decisions and directions.”
Meanwhile the Bangaladesh contingent arrived here this afternoon and the team has been accommodated at the D’Sapp-hire hotel in the Hatigaon area here. Teams from Pakistan and Sri Lanka also reached the city today and they have to face an untoward situation after arrival as Organising Committee officials were not present at the airport.
