GUWAHATI, Feb 3 - A citizens’ meeting, held at the Lakhiram Barua Sadan here today with noted scholar Dr Hiren Gohain in the chair, formed a new organisation, Sachetan Nagarik Mancha to generate public awareness on issues concerning politics, society and culture from the grassroot level throughout the State, said a press release here.
The meeting was organised by those distinguished persons who have been leading an agitation against the move to construct a war memorial on the north bank of the historic Dighalipukhuri tank.
The Mancha, which will be led by Dr Hiren Gohain as its president, will engage itself in transforming the existing popular movements in different parts of the State for bringing an end to the social and cultural degeneration afflicting the State’s society, into a massive united movement, the participants of the meeting said in a resolution.
They also decided to hold public debates with the participation of the candidates who will contest the 2016 Assembly elections in the State.
Speakers of the meeting included noted artiste Dilip Kumar Hazarika, noted writer Harekrishna Deka, distinguished citizen Jnan Sankar Khaklari of Goalpara, Dr Apurba Kumar Barua, Rani Gohain, Jyotiprasad Saikia and Dr Manorama Sarma among others.
