DIPHU, Feb 3 – The Karbi Ningkan Kimi (Karbi New Year’s Day) was celebrated with pomp and gaiety across the Karbi Anglong hill district on February 1. According to the Karbi calendar, the Thangthang Niphai 1, February 1, is considered as the New Year’s Day. Since long the Karbi people have been observing February 1 as the New Year’s Day every year.
The Karbi people observed the Ningkan Kimi throughout the Karbi Anglong Autonomous district. The Karbi New Year celebrations began with the Hemphu Karkil (devotion to the Almighty) in the morning as per Karbi rituals. To spread the messages of peace and unity, a number of balloons were released by the Karbi New Year revellers.
According to reports received, the Ningkam Kimi was celebrated at Rajapathar Tiniali. While attending the Karbi New Year Day’s celebrations, Sum Ronghang, vice chairman, Hills Planning Board, Government of Assam, greeted the people of Karbi Anglong and called for peace and tranquility in the district.
On the other hand, the Karbi Ningkam Kimi was also celebrated at the Hamren sub-secretariat complex where Joy Ram Engleng, CEM, KAAC, Mongal Sing and Timung, EM, KAAC, took part as the chief guest and invited guests respectively.
While appealing to the people to maintain peace and tranquillity, he laid stress on the need to enrich the Karbi culture. According to reports received, the Karbi New Year was celebrated under the aegis of the Langpher Karbi Jutang Chingthur Amei (LKJCA), a premier Karbi cultural organisation, at Richo Hidi Tiniali near Bakaliaghat. During the day-long programme, the Karbi society observed the Karbi Ningkan Kimi by holding various Karbi traditional events namely, Hambi Kepathu, Hon Kijen, Bathali Keup, Kengdon Dang, Choketok, etc.
It may be mentioned here that the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council declared February 1 as an official holiday through out Karbi Anglong.
