|Karbi New Year celebrated|
DIPHU, Feb 1 – The Karbi Ningkan Kimi (Karbi New Year) was celebrated with pomp and gaiety across the Karbi Anglong Hill district on February 1.
Karbi Ningkam Kimi was also celebrated at Howraghat Pan Engti playground with a two-day programme. It was organised by Jirlong Ahamphang, an NGO in association with Tattva Creations.
After hoisting the flags of Karbi New Year and NGO Jirlong Ahamphang, various traditional games and cultural programmes were held in the morning. The flag of the Karbi New Year and NGO Jirlong Ahamphang was unfurled by Mensing Engti, Mouzadar of Howraghat and Sarjeng Engti, president of Jirlong Ahamphang NGO respectively.
Traditional games like tug-of-war, blind hit, sack race, 100 metre race, musical chair, needle and tread race, long jump and spoon race were held among the boys, girls and the women present on the occasion. The traditional fashion show competition organised for the Karbi women was the main attraction at the festival venue.
Subsequently, a cultural night was held from 9 pm which was formally inaugurated by Deuri Lekthe, chairman of Howraghat Town Committee. Among others, local artistes Semsonsing Engti and Santana Kilingpi regaled the audience.
Tomorrow’s programme will begin with Thong Nokbe Kekat (marathon race) in the morning. The prize distribution function will be held in the evening and Tuliram Ronghang, CEM of KAAC will attend the function as the chief guest. The musical nite will start from 6 pm. Angarag Mahanta will also perform at the function from 10 pm.
State HAD Minister Kharsing Engti, Dhansing Kro, chairman of KAAC and Turliram Ronghang, CEM of KAAC will attend the function as special guests. Besides, all the EMs and MACs of KAAC will be present as guests of honour.
It may be pertinent to add here that according to the Karbi calendar, Thangthang Niphai 1, i.e., February 1 is considered the New Year by the Karbi community. Since long, the Karbis have been observing February 1 as the New Year with great enthusiasm throughout the Karbi Anglong Autonomous district.
