GUWAHATI, Jan 31 - The number of traffic accidents has witnessed an increase in Assam and the State contributed to 1.6 per cent of all such cases nationwide.
As per latest government data, there were a total of 7,756 traffic accidents in the State during 2018.
This is an increase of 5.2 per cent on an annual basis compared to the figure of 7,371 traffic accident cases reported in Assam during 2017.
Nationally, there were over 4.74 lakh traffic accidents during the year under review, with Assam accounting for over 1.6 per cent of the total cases.
However, even as the number of road accidents went up in Assam during 2018, cases of railway accidents witnessed a marginal decline.
Assam recorded 7,180 cases of road accidents in 2018 as against 6,805 in 2017, registering an increase of 5.5 per cent year-on-year.
But incidents of railway accidents went down by 1.9 per cent to 555 cases in 2018 from 566 in the previous year.
Meanwhile, the State also reported 21 railway crossing accidents during 2018, compared to none in 2017.
Overall, 3,291 persons died and 6,084 were injured on account of traffic accidents in Assam during the year under review.
Road accidents accounted for 2,712 fatalities and 6,081 were injured in such incidents.
Railway accidents took the lives of 557 persons. In addition, 22 died and three were injured in railway crossing accidents.
Of all the road accident cases that took place in Assam during 2018, as many as 3,397 were reported from national highways, 1,835 took place in State highways, 38 in expressways, and 1,910 in other roads.
Among the road accident fatalities, 1,361 died in incidents that took place in national highways, 634 in State highways, 22 in expressways and 695 in other roads.
Regarding classification of those injured in road accidents, 2,839 sustained injuries in cases that happened in national highways, 1,505 in State highways, 45 in expressways and 1,692 in other roads.
Of the total road accidents fatalities during 2018, 1,579 deaths took place in rural areas and 1,133 in urban areas.
In addition, 2,307 of the fatalities or road accidents in Assam were with regard to males and 405 were females.
As far as railway accidents are concerned, all cases and fatalities in the State during 2018 were on account of either fall from running train or due to collision with people on tracks, as per the data.
