Green Valley outshot ASEB

 GUWAHATI, Dec 30 – Green Valley Sports Club are into the quarterfinal of the 62nd Bharat Ratna Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Trophy Football Tournament after they defeated ASEB Sports Club by an aggregate of 7-6 goals in sudden death.

The inaugural encounter of the championship at the Nehru Stadium here today ended 1-1 in regulation time and in the tie-breaker, both the teams struck twice. In sudden death, ASEB custodian Daoga Brahma failed to convert the 7th shot while Debinder Singh fired home to seal the match in Green Valley’s favour.

It was an evenly played match with both the teams adopted attacking tactics from the initial stage.

Nigerian Babatunde Badmas put Green Valley ahead in the 10th minute with an intelligent goal. Receiving the ball from Lucky Imran at the top of the box, Babatunde dodged past ASEB defender Mitradeb Swargiary and beat the opponent goalkeeper with a smart drive.

After 7 minutes, Syed Anser drew parity with a header off a flag kick taken by Nitu Narzary. At the fag end of the first session, Micheal Lucky squandered a golden opportunity to take his team ahead.

In the second half, the ASEB boys took the upper hand with some planned moves. But their strikers Gopi Singh and Ramsang Liana failed to hit the target despite finding the Green Valley goalkeeper alone.

In the tie-breaker, Nitu Narzary, Ramsang, Biplab Kundu and Vanlal Nuana were the successful shooters while Vanlal Zuidika missed his opportunity.

For Green Valley, Babatunde, Micheal Lucky, Gaiham Rangmei and Jenga Rangmei converted their shots as first shooter Satwinder Singh failed.

In sudden death, Bijoy Borgohain and Debinder Singh were on target while for ASEB, Sanjay Boro availed his chance.

Earlier, former referee Bipin Ch Deka inaugurated the championship in the opening ceremony where along with GSA officials, former OIL official DD Khound, Assam Football Association secretary Ankur Dutta and former international footballer Abdul Latif were also present.
