Nanda wins chess championship

 GUWAHATI, Dec 26 – Trailokya Nanda clinched the title in the 1st Guwahati Open Air Prize Money Blitz Chess Challenge organised by the State BJP Sports Cell on the occasion of the 90th birthday of Bharat Ratna and former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee at Guwahati Club Rotary yesterday.

Rajib Dhar and Nandan Buragohain claimed the second and third positions respectively in the day-long meet.

Altogether 138 players participated in the championship which was conducted as per FIDE Laws of Chess and FIDE Swiss system with 9 rounds under the supervision of Biswajit Bharadwaj.

A total amount of Rs 30,000 was at stake as prize money where top 10 players were handed over cash awards. Medals and certificates were also awarded to first two players in each category of girls, women, veteran and U-7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19 age groups.

The State BJP Sports Cell convenor Bishov Lal Pathak informed that the purpose of the event was to popularise the game of chess which is usually regarded as a non-spectator game.

Players from 4th to 10th position holders were Pradeep Bhuyan, Subhajit Dhar, Khanindra Barman, Amlan Mahanta, Uddipta Kakoti, Hage Lasa Nado, Ravikant Tiwari.
