IMPHAL, Dec 26 – Skeletal remains of at least eight persons were discovered during construction of a new women’s market complex here on Friday.

Reports said the skeletal remains including eight human skulls along with bangles, finger ring and few coins of 1907 were discovered while labourers were levelling the earth at the construction site of the Civil Secretariat at Mantripukhuri about three km north of Imphal.

The earth being levelled at the Mantripukhuri construction site was dug out by earthmovers and transported from another construction site at Tombisana High School where the construction of a women’s market complex is underway, in the heart of the Imphal town.

Though the skeletal remains were apparently dug out from the site of the women’s market, they were discovered only when the earth was being levelled at Mantripukhuri site.

A police team including Forensic Science experts rushed to the spot and collected the human bones for investigation and examinations.

Heingang police station in Imphal East district has registered a case.

The Tombisana High School campus which is located opposite the Old Assembly Complex in Imphal was once used by Central Reserve Police Force followed by State police commandos prior to the ongoing construction works for the new women’s market complex. Sources claimed that the northern portion of the Tombisana High School campus was once used as a mortuary of the then old district hospital which was dismantled more than a decade ago.
