|‘Bogeebil’ is the correct spelling: Prof Dutta|
GUWAHATI, Dec 25 - Urging the State government and all concerned not to write the spelling of the name of the new bridge on the Brahmaputra connecting Dhola and Sadiya as ‘Bogibeel’, public activist Prof Deven Dutta has said that for years the word Bogeebil (the correct word) – whether in reference to the place Bogeebil or to the bridge itself – had wrongly been spelt as Bogibeel.
“Irrespective of whether the bridge is named after some eminent personality or named as Bogeebil, the word Bogeebil should not be spelt as Bogibeel for any kind of reference – as has been the common and widespread practice,” he said.
Prof Dutta said the spelling ‘beel’ used to mean a water-body (a small lake) had gained currency for being in use over a very long period of time, even though the correct spelling should have been ‘bil’. “The State government needs to ensure that any reference to the bridge is made as Bogeebil and not Bogibeel,” he said.
