GUWAHATI, Dec 23 - The first Preeti Barua Literary Award will be conferred on well-known writer and intellectual Dr Sivanath Barman in January next year, said a joint statement issued by the Assam Lekhika Sangstha and Preeti Barua-Prasanta Kumar Barua Sowarani Samiti here.

The organisations said that the award has been instituted to perpetuate the memory of Late Preeti Barua, a well-known writer and founder secretary of the Assam Lekhika Sangstha. The award carries a citation, a bundle of selected books and Rs 50,000 in cash.

Dr Barman has been selected for the award for his significant contributions to Assamese literature in diverse areas of philosophy, science, history, sociology and Sankaradeva studies. He has been instrumental in moulding a style of prose that can handle a complex subject with admirable lucidity, said the Sangstha and the Samiti.
