Tripura Cong gets acting president
Correspondent
AGARTALA, Dec 18 - The chairman of the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) ad-hoc committee and senior Congress leader Pijush Kanti Biswas has been made the acting State Congress president, according to an AICC release.

“Pijush Kanti Biswas will continue in the post till a regular president is appointed by the PCC,” the notification signed by AICC general secretary KC Venugopal stated. Notably, Biswas’s son, Pujan, became the full-fledged president of the Youth Congress in the State recently.

The AICC picked Biswas, one of the most acceptable leaders of the TPCC, to downplay the hectic lobbying among various factions, according to party insiders. Three senior leaders – Birajit Sinha, Gopal Roy and Subal Bhowmik – were strong contenders to the post, but party supremo Sonia Gandhi chose Biswas who has been overseeing the party’s legal affairs for a long time.

“Soniaji reposed faith in me to rebuild the party in Tripura where the BJP has been executing anti-people policies for the past 20 months. I appeal to all leaders who deserted the party to rejoin the Congress to take on the BJP. I want to work with all the party leaders and supporters,” Biswas told reporters here today.
