Cong, Left, Islamic bigots fanning unrest, claims BJP
PRANJAL BHUYAN
GUWAHATI, Dec 15 - The Congress, Left and Islamic fundamentalist groups are trying to fan unrest in the State by taking advantage of the ongoing protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act-2019, or the CAA, according to the ruling BJP.

Sources in the saffron party alleged that the violence and vandalism witnessed in many places across the State, including Guwahati, during the course of the anti-CAA agitation has been instigated by elements in the Congress, the Left and radical Islamists.

“Look at Upper Assam. As soon as Akhil Gogoi was arrested, the Upper Assam districts became peaceful. In Guwahati, the violence and vandalism originated in localities inhabited by suspected immigrants. While the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and other regional groups protested peacefully and called upon everybody to maintain peace, some Opposition groups and other elements tried to instigate the protesters and resorted to largescale vandalism of public property,” said a senior State BJP office-bearer on condition of anonymity.

He added, “The vandalism clearly points to inspiration from hardline Left elements. The Communist line clearly calls for destruction of institutions and public property. Despite the largescale arson and vandalism, police and security forces showed maximum restraint.”

BJP leaders said that there is an attempt to hijack the anti-CAA protest by the Congress, Left and Islamic radicals.

“Akhil Gogoi is on record to have made many provocative statements. He said that the State should be brought to a standstill. People like Anup Chetia urged people to violate the curfew. Such calls were clearly made to provoke a showdown between the administration and the masses. AASU, AJYCP and other regional non-political forces are not responsible for what took place. But maybe after the North East bandh, the AASU could have waited for a day or two before launching its next protests so as to allow the tempers to calm,” said a BJP leader.

He claimed that as per reports, many persons of suspected immigrant origin took the lead in carrying out vandalism and arson in Guwahati.

“People must understand that the objective of AASU and AJYCP on the one side and Congress, Left and the AIUDF on the other with regard to the CAA are totally different. AASU, AJYCP and other local groups are opposed to CAA per se. But the Congress, Left and AIUDF would have supported the legislation had Muslims from the three neighbouring countries also been made eligible for citizenship,” said the ruling party leader.

It may be mentioned that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill or CAB became the CAA after receiving the accent from President Ram Nath Kovind.
