Birdie bags double crown in national TT

 GUWAHATI, Dec 15 – Assam boy Birdie Boro, now an inmate of Ajmeer based Petroleum Sports Promotion Board Academy, won the double crown in the 73rd Sub Junior National Table Tennis Championship held at Cochin from December 8 to 14.

Top seed Birdie won the boys single title defeating Anirban Ghosh of West Bengal 7-11, 7-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-5 in a gruelling title clash.

In the double final, Birdie, pairing with Lalrin Puia, trounced the Lalhun Lua-Raja Kundu duo 11-6, 11-8, 11-8 in straight sets. After a gap of 23 years, an Assam boy has clinched the title. Earlier, Arunjyoti Baruah, Soneswar Deka and Anupam Konwar won the title in the year 1980, 1983 and 1988 respectively.

The Table Tennis Association has congratulated the paddler for his achievement.
