|Tripura CPM MLA axed on charge of moral error |
AGARTALA, Dec 11 - Monoranjan Acharjee, CPM MLA of Amarpur Assembly constituency in Gomati district of Tripura has resigned following instruction from the party’s State Secretariat, an official release said here on Friday.
He has also been suspended from the party on moral error ground. With this, the CPM has so far axed four party MLAs – Ananta Paul, Kartik Kanya Debbarma and Bhudeb Bhattacharjee, besides Acharjee, who were shown the door.
Sources said, a mother of five and half year-old girl had lodged a complaint before party’s State unit secretary Bijan Dhar alleging that her minor girl was sexually abused by the MLA.
Following the written complaint, the CPM State Secretariat carried out an inquiry into the case and found the party MLA at fault. The victim’s mother has also informed the matter to Chief Minister Manik Sarkar when he went to Amarpur civic election campaign.
To avoid an embarrassing situation, the party secretary summoned him to the party headquarters on Thursday and asked him to resign as MLA and accordingly, he resigned. The drastic action has been taken to send a stern message that the party would not tolerate any immoral activities, sources said.
When contacted, opposition leader Sudip Roy Barman alleged that the party has been shielding the CPM leader by axing him. “In such a case, the police should take legal action against Monoranjan Acharjee suo-moto. We strongly condemn such act by a ruling party MLA”, he said.
