JORHAT, Dec 10 - Police had to resort to firing in the air at Malow-Ali-Jorhat By-Pass intersection this evening after a lathicharge failed to quell a group of anti-CAB protestors some of whom reportedly pelted stones at policemen who tried to remove burning tyres on the By-Pass disrupting vehicular traffic.

A senior police official told this newspaper tonight that police fired three rounds of rubber bullets to bring the situation under control after the protesters reportedly attacked the cops and a lathicharge could not stop the protesters.

Two policemen and two persons among the protesting men sustained minor injuries. The official said that traffic later resumed on the By-Pass, which is part of the National Highway-37 and situation was under contract with additional police personnel deployed in the area to maintain law and order. An executive magistrate of Jorhat district administration visited the incident site to take stock of the situation.
