NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Dec 10 - Lakhimpur witnessed a complete shutdown as an 11-hour North East bandh called in protest of the Citizenship Amendment Bill-2019 passed off in a clamorous note in the entire district.

The bandh was called by North East Students Organisation (NESO) in which the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) is an affiliate. The bandh was supported by Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parichad (AJYCP), Krishak Mukti Sangram Parishad (KMSS) and other organisations. Since morning, the bandh supporters blocked roads by burning tyres at different parts of Lakhimpur district. AASU and other bandh supporters burnt tyres in Dhakuakhana, Ghilamora, Batomari, Gogamukh, Bogeenadi, Panigaon, Nowboicha, Laluk, Bihpuria, Harmutty, Banderdewa, Kherazkhat, Narayanpur, Dhalpur besides in district headquarters North Lakhimpur. AASU and general public converged at Swahid Bhawan in North Lakhimpur today and paid tributes to the martyrs of Assam Movement by writing pledges to oppose CAB in blood on the altars of Swahid Bedi.
Later a huge crowd led by Lakhimpur AASU converged at the main traffic intersection in North Lakhimpur and burnt tyres shouting ant-CAB and anti-government slogans. They also took out a procession throughout the town before gathering in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office where they staged a protest. Similar protest marches were also taken out by AJYCP and All Asom Mariya Yuva Parishad.
Bandh supporters also blocked railway lines in North Lakhimpur Railway Station halting the Dekargaon-Murkongselek Passenger train. There were reports of damaging a vehicle in Deejo Tea Estate and Ananda Tea Estate by bandh supporters today.
In a show of solidarity to the anti-CAB agitation, members of North Lakhimpur Press Club also extended their support to the bandh by moving on bicycles to collect news in North Lakhimpur today. Section 144 was clamped in the district.
