GUWAHATI, Dec 6 - More than eight years after the sensational Jogdal mass murder incident shook the entire State, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today arrested two prime accused including the then officer-in-charge of the Sonapur police station and the first investigating officer of the case in question. Pranab Kumar Deka, the then officer-in-charge of Sonapur Police Station has been arrested along with Abdul Matif Choudhury, the then investigating officer of the local police station (Sonapur).
“The investigation into the case which many alleged was swept under the carpet largely due to political interference has now gained momentum and more skeletons could come out of the closet,” said a top Assam Police official while sharing the information.
Harakanta Doloi and five other of his family were killed in cold blood by miscreants in Jogdal area under Sonapur police station in 2009.
The case, which was initially investigated by the Sonapur police, was later handed over to the CID for investigation
Both Deka and Choudhury are charged with destroying the evidences with a motive to shield the culprits. It was allegedly at the instance of Deka, the then officer-in-charge, the scene of murder (house) was burnt down by some unidentified persons, including a few locals.
“Both Deka and Choudhury are being quizzed by a special team of officers,” sources told The Assam Tribune.
The CID had also questioned Pusphak Kumar Baruah, the then deputy director of Forensic Science Laboratory (now retired) on similar charges.
Several high-profile names including the then Congress Minister Akon Bora too surfaced in the mass murder episode which remains as a mystery till date.
The case (CID police station case number 18/2012) has been registered under Sec 120(B), 436, and 201 of the Indian Penal Code.
The CID had arrested another accused Arjun Bordoloi, who too later died under mysterious circumstances.
