Polling peaceful in Dibrugarh

 DIBRUGARH, Dec 5 - Elections to the three-tier panchayati raj system till 6 pm was largely peaceful in the district. The exact voter turn out in the district could not be ascertained as polling in several polling stations was continuing. However, it is speculated that the turnout could be nearly 70 %.

There were reports of commotion in a few polling stations reportedly due to difference in the name list of the voters held by polling agents and presiding officers and due to change in the venue of polling but they were resolved and polling resumed within a couple of hours. Overall, polling in the district was conducted smoothly and peacefully as no untoward incident was reported from anywhere. Polling had started from 7 am and was still continuing in several polling stations.

Elections in the district were conducted in altogether 1055 polling stations. In all 5275 personnel were engaged for the smooth conduct of the polls. The fate of 3214 candidates who contested for the posts of Zilla Parishad Member, Anchalik Panchayat Member, Gaon Panchayat president and Ward Members will be decided on December 12.
