GUWAHATI, Dec 5 - Members of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today held a silent sit-in demonstration for two hours from 10 am today, in front of the Gandhi Mandap here, in protest against the derogatory comments made by Bharat Sewashram’s Partha Maharaj against Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru at a meeting held at the Silchar Gandhi Bhawan recently.
According to an APCC press release, the demonstration was led by Congress Legislature Party leader Debabrata Saikia. The participants wielded placards with slogans like ‘Gandhi’s enemies are the enemies of the nation,’ ‘Bring an end to the period of intolerance and violence,’ etc.
Addressing the gathering, Debabrata Saikia said that the Mahatma was imprisoned on several occasions by the British colonial rulers for leading the nation against colonialism. But Partha Maharaj has described him as the main cause of the problems facing the country today. Moreover, the Mahatma has been described as an ‘executioner’ and has also been compared with the ‘Dhritarashtra’ of the Mahabharata by Partha Maharaj.
The Bharat Sewashram hermit also tried to belittle Pandit Nehru as an incarnation of ‘Durjyodhana’, Saikia said.
But the fact remains that under the leadership of the Mahatma, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the people of the country joined the freedom struggle en masse and that resulted in freedom from the colonial yoke.
