Man trampled
STAFF Correspondent
JORHAT, Dec 2 - Damu Pradhan (50), a villager near the Meleng Tea Estate under Lahdoigarh Police Outpost on the outskirts of Jorhat, was trampled to death inside his house by a wild herd of elephants in the wee hours of Saturday.

The herd believed to be coming out of nearby Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary reportedly destroyed several houses in the area.

Depredation by jumbos is a severe problem faced by the people of villages and tea estates in the surrounding areas of the sanctuary as the wild elephants often stray into human settlements in search of food.

Ripened paddy and vegetables ready for consumption and rice grain stored by families in the houses in the fringe areas of the sanctuary attract the jumbos, especially during the winter season leading to heightening of man-elephant conflict, a Forest department source observed.

Illicit liquor producing units in the surrounding areas of the sanctuary too attract the wild elephants, the source said.
