NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Dec 2 - A massive protest rally against the Citizenship Amendment Bill-2016 was taken out by North Lakhimpur regional unit of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) today.

The North Lakhimpur AASU led a motorcycle rally against the CAB-2016 in North Lakhimpur and campaigned against it in nearby villages and suburban areas sensitising the public about it. More than 200 members of AASU-NL unit participated in the motorcycle rally. Later in a press release, the president of North Lakhimpur AASU Pranjeet Gogoi and secretary Punam Jyoti Buragohain termed the CAB-2016 as divisive, communally-motivated and anti-Constitutional and demanded its scrapping as being opposed to the tenets of the Assam Accord.

The motorcycle rally which started from AASU office Swaheed Bhavan in North Lakhimpur was sent off by Pulak Borah, president of Lakhimpur district AASU and Dhanmani Dutta, its secretary. The agitating student members shouted slogans against Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal calling him a villain. They also flayed other state ministers like Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, Atul Bora and Keshab Mahanta for their complicit role in endorsing the CAB.

Meanwhile, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Parishad (AJYP) took out a protest march against the Lower Subansiri Hydro Electrical Power plant at Gerukamukh. The agitators gathered at the Chawuldhowa ghat of Subansiri river and protested against the construction against the dam work on the same river by standing in knee-deep water on the river bed. The protest programme was the part of a series of agitations led by AJYP against LSHEP by National Hydro-electrical Power Corporation at Gerukamukh over Subansiri since the last week. The agitators also took an oath to preserve the natural form of the river from the dangers of the dam work and their impact and reiterated their demand to scrap the project for the sake of the safety and security of the people living on the downstream areas of the Subansiri in Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Majuli districts.
