Kokrajhar TV scribe gets bail
Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Dec 2 – The Gauhati High Court today granted bail to Jaiklong Brahma, the Kokrajhar-based television journalist who was arrested on charges of hobnobbing with the banned NDFB(S) in September in connection with the Kokrajhar police station case number 367/2014.

Although Brahma, represented by advocates Bijon Mahajan and Arshad Choudhury in the court, was initially booked under several sections of the Indian Penal Code and the amended Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, later the Assam Government also booked him under the National Security Act (NSA).

The court, however, had recently set aside the order of his detention under the NSA and set him at liberty if he was not needed in another case.

Because of the present case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, where there is a provision for detention for a period of 180 days, the accused remained under detention till date.

Today, a single-judge bench comprising Justice AK Goswami enlarged Brahma on bail on execution of a bail bond of Rs 50,000 with two sureties of the like amount on the condition that he shall not leave the jurisdiction of the CJM concerned (Kokrajhar) without prior permission and that he will appear before the investigating officer every fortnight.

Advocate BD Gogoi represented the Government of Assam.
