Gogoi criticizes Modi’s ‘Smart Police’
Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Dec 1 – Criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘SMART Police’ concept, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today emphasized on diagnosing the real problems behind proliferation of security issues and said unemployment, flood, erosion and general backwardness of the State has contributed to the insurgency in Assam.

“Security is not merely related to law and order. We have to diagnose the real reasons behind growth of insurgency. Among them is lack of employment opportunities, backwardness, lack of connectivity afflicting the State. There is massive erosion in the State due to which thousands have become homeless. It is also a major reason for insurgency,” Gogoi told reporters here.

His remarks came as Gogoi elaborated on what he termed as contradictions between Modi’s words during the Lok Sabha poll campaign and his government’s stand on issues since winning power. Gogoi accused Modi of not taking steps to offer adequate assistance to Assam on various issues.

“Security and development are linked. Without development, the problem will remain.

He further added, “Modi talked about SMART Police. How can police not be smart? Police have always to be smart, alert, responsible and mobile. He (Modi) is talking as if this is a new concept.”

Asked about Modi’s old promise to seal the India-Bangladesh border, Gogoi said, “Let him do it.”
