Bike rally, doll show organised on AIDS Day

 GUWAHATI, Dec 1 – Along with the rest of the world, World AIDS Day was observed by various organisations of the State with an objective to increase awareness among the people about prevention and treatment of AIDS.

The theme of the day this year was ‘Getting to Zero- Zero HIVs AIDS, Zero new HIV infections, Zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths.’

The event was commemorated in the North-East India by Population Health Services India(PHSI), a social marketing organisation with its headquarters in Hyderabad. PHSI is principally involved in Condom Social Marketing Programme (CSMP) around India.

On the occasion, programmes were organised in the States of Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura. These are the States, which has PHSI intervention with support from National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO). In Assam, it was organised mainly in four districts of Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup (Rural), Dhubri and Barpeta. In Kamrup (Metro), the programme was inaugurated in Guwahati at 10 am by Mrinal Kanti Ghosal, State Programme Manager, PHSI-NE.

As part of the programme, PHSI organised a motorbike rally which was flagged off by Ghosal. The bikes in the rally carried flags depicting condom promotion messages. The rally travelled from Dispur Last Gate to GS Road and finally routed back to Six Mile.

After the rally, a ventriloquism show termed as doll show was organised in and around the Six Mile area. The doll show was followed by a street drama on condom awareness, said a press statement.

During the programme, several other measures were taken up for promotion of condoms.

“The World AIDS Day, 2014 organised by PHSI-NE was quite a success and delivered optimum visibility about condom promotion in busy areas of the city,” it added.

The programme was also attended by Hirak Jyoti Roy, state marketing manager, NACO Technical Support Group, Prabal Baruah, field operations manager, PHSI-NE, Pranom Datta Mazumdar, IEC manager-NE, Shyamal Roy, area sales manager, Ashish Ranjan Roy, area sales manager, Tajnur Ahmed, IEC officer-Assam along with the sales and IEC team of Kamrup(Metro).
