GUWAHATI, Nov 30 – Seeking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention for improving the condition of the scheduled caste people of Assam, the All Assam Scheduled Caste Students’ Union submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister yesterday demanding a separate secretariat to implement the projects for the progress of the SC people.
Arguing that even after several decades of Independence, the socio-economic condition of the SC people of Assam has remained grim largely due to administrative loopholes, it said that some specific measures are required to redress the problem of the SC people.
“The regular scholarship to the scheduled caste students of Assam has been hampered due to administrative discrimination. Hence, we demand a separate administrative mechanism to implement the scholarship scheme of the SC students,” said the memorandum.
The union also demanded measures to clear the backlog in promotion of the SC and ST government officials of the State, which is pending for a long time in spite of the notifications issued by the government from time to time.
The other demands incorporated in the memorandum included a regional office of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for better supervision and implementation of the projects meant for development of the SC people of Assam, special Central grant to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore to the SC Development Corporation Ltd, Assam and re-implementation of the model village scheme, with a special caution to cover the SC-dominated villages only.
The student body also urged Modi to order a CBI probe into the misappropriation of funds meant for SC people of Assam.
