Manipur CM lays foundation stones of irrigation, infrastructure projects

 IMPHAL, Aug 29 - Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Friday laid the foundation stones of various irrigation and infrastructure projects to be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 647 crore, through video conferencing here.

 The projects include 375 surface minor irrigation schemes, 550 groundwater irrigation schemes and 151 infrastructure projects. The first two irrigation schemes will be taken up under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana – Har Khet Ko Pani, with the financial assistance of the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti, while the remaining projects will be under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram.

Deputy Commissioners of different districts unveiled the plaques of foundation stones at the respective sites on behalf of the Chief Minister.

Speaking at the video conferencing session, the Chief Minister said that he had instructed the officials concerned and work agencies to complete all these projects by August next year.

Stressing the need for enhancement of irrigation facilities for self-reliance in food production, the Chief Minister said the State had revived 250 defunct lift irrigation schemes, adding that the Minor Irrigation Department has started playing a key role in enhancing irrigation facilities.

He said 151 infrastructure projects the foundation stones of which were laid include many residential schools, working women’s hostels and medical facilities.

The Chief Minister added that a guesthouse for village chiefs of different districts of Manipur would be constructed at an estimated cost of around Rs 7 crore inside the Royal Palace complex, Imphal. He also stated that Barak and Makru bridges along the Imphal-Jiribam highway would be completed by December this year.

Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar and other ministers also spoke on the occasion which was attended by ministers Karam Shyam, Letpao Haokip and Awangbow Newmai, MPs RK Ranjan and Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba, MLAs and others.
