|Drought-like situation hits Paschim Nalbari; foodgrain production likely to dip |
TIHU, Aug 28 - After the vagaries of flood, the farmers of Paschim Nalbari are now facing a drought-like situation. The situation has reached such a magnitude that the overall foodgrain production in the areas is likely to dip to a large extent. The farmers of many areas of greater Tihu, including Kaithalkuchi, Chamata are facing a drought-like situation in view of the scanty rainfall. Cracks have started developing in the agricultural land due to shortage of water for which sali crops have been affected.
“The drought-like situation has affected our crops, and we will be incurring huge losses this season,” a group of farmers told ANN Service today.
Generally, Nalbari experiences sufficient rainfall, but due to prevailing weather conditions, the entire area is now under the grip of a drought-like situation.
“We do not have a proper irrigation system to irrigate our crop lands, as a result of which the problem has aggravated,” the farmers observed.
According to available information, around 35 villages of Paschim Nalbari have been affected by drought. Worried over the situation, the farmers have appealed to the State government to extend all possible help to tide over the crisis.
