BJP protests Chakma council’s land rules

AIZAWL, Aug 27 - The Mizoram BJP today said it has demonstrated in Lawngtlai district to protest against the Chakma Autonomous District Council (Land and Revenue) Rules, 2019, claiming that some of its provisions are anti-people.

They held the demonstration in front of the Chakma Autonomous District Council’s office at Chawngte and set fire to the copies of the Rules on Monday.

“There are certain provisions in the Rules which are against the interest of the residents of the area. The BJP sees it as a policy of the executive committee to snatch people’s lands,” the statement said. The saffron party said there were no land lease and ceiling provisions in the CADC Land Revenue and Settlement Act, 2002, which safeguarded the lands of the residents of the area.

The council’s executive committee headed by Chief Executive Member RM Chakma of the Mizo National Front passed the Rules on August 21 during the monsoon session of the council with 17 votes in favour and seven votes against it, the release said. “All seven Opposition BJP members of district council voted against the Rules as the party found it to be a threat to permanent residents of the district council,” it said. – PTI
