Unfamiliar insect causing concern in city localities
City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, Aug 27 - A small insect has created panic among the residents of New Guwahati and Bamunimaidam areas of the city for the past few days. The insect, which is reddish in colour, has been detected in large numbers in every household of the two areas.

“Though the insect has not caused any harm to anyone, still it has created panic among all. The insect is so small in size that it can easily pass through a mosquito net. Children are particularly vulnerable to this insect,” Debashish Bezbaruah, a resident of New Guwahati locality said.

Another resident Bidyut Barun Sarma informed that the insect has been present in the area for the last one month. Local people suspect it to have originate in the rice stored in the FCI godown located at Bamunimaidam.

Prof Ranjit Neog, entomologist in the College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara, told The Assam Tribune that such insects might breed in foodgrain stocked in godowns, “but its name, characteristics and behaviour can be identified only after proper investigation.”
