JORABAT, Aug 25 - Continuing the crackdown on the illegal timber trade, a team from the Khanapara forest beat office led by beat officer Prahlad Gayan seized a vehicle carrying timber in the early hours of Sunday in Khanapara area.
Gayan said the six-wheel truck bearing registration number AS-25-AC-1455 was reportedly transporting firewood illegally from Meghalaya towards Nalbari via Jorabat.
Initial investigation revealed that the truck did not have the required documents for transportation. The driver identified the vehicle owner as S Prasad. The truck has been sent to the Rani range for safe custody.
“Two teams of our beat office led by Jintu M Talukdar and Bidyut Das are on alert, as part of the crackdown against the illegal timber trade,” Gayan said, adding that the crackdown against illegal timber trade will continue.
Sources said that a large number of timber-laden vehicles coming from Meghalaya and passing through Jorabat to enter Assam have been seized in the past. Most of these vehicles travel without proper documents, causing huge loss of revenue to the government.
