Man Utd play 1-1 against Sunderland

Juan Mata puts Manchester United ahead against Sunderland in London on Sunday.
LONDON, Aug 25 (Agencies): Louis van Gaalís Manchester United has taken just one point from their first two matches of the Premier League season, and the Red Devils were fortunate to come away with a 1-1 tie against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.

Juan Mata gave Manchester United an early lead, finishing a great cross from Antonio Valencia from just a few yards away at the back post, but Unitedís defense conceded 13 minutes later.

Sunderlandís Jack Rodwell turned in a completely free header in the 30th minute, taking advantage of Unitedís poor defending on a corner kick. Valencia was marking Rodwell as Sebastian Larsson was preparing to take the kick, but Rodwell burned Valencia with a quick move in the box and Robin van Persie couldnít jump high enough to clear the cross away.

Manchester United made small advances in the Sunderland half in the second half Ėthe rumored arrival of Real Madridís Angel di Maria canít come soon enough Ė but a team that barely avoided relegation last season limited United to hopeful strikes from well outside the box.

Ashley Young thought he earned a penalty kick in the 62nd minute after a challenge from Wes Brown in the penalty area, but referee Martin Atkinson immediately gave Young a yellow for simulation. Although replays showed that Brown clearly made contact with Young, the midfielder made little effort to play through the contact and was trying to bait out the penalty call.
