GUWAHATI, Aug 23 - The Assam government today signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with NHPC Limited for implementation of the 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project.
Niraj Verma, Principal Secretary (Power), signed the MoA on behalf of Government of Assam and Balraj Joshi, CMD, NHPC signed the MoA on behalf of NHPC.
The Subansiri Lower HE Project is the largest hydro project of the country, presently under construction with an installed capacity of 2000 MW and annual generation of 7421.59 MU and is located on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.
“Being a part of the cascade development conceived by the Brahmaputra Board, the project would also afford relief from floods by moderating the flood by Subansiri river.
The NHPC has undertaken protection works along both the banks of Subansiri river in the downstream area for containing flood water and checking soil erosion,” an NHPC statement said.
The NHPC is also implementing downstream developmental works which includes livelihood intervention and infrastructure developmental works. Construction of the project will bring an overall development in the area and give a fillip to the overall economy, the statement said.
Construction activities of the Subansiri Hydroelectric Project have been stopped since 2011 due to agitation by some pressure groups.
“After a number of committees appraised the project and suggested remedial measures, all the technical apprehensions stand assuaged and legal hurdles cleared. The NHPC is now set to resume the construction work of the project after the rainy season is over. NHPC is fully committed to complete the project with the support of local people,” the statement read.
