GUWAHATI, Aug 23 – Promising boxer of the State Pwilao Basumatary was today awarded the Dr Phani Sharma Commemorative Talent Award for Sports by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in a function held at the Anuradha Cineplex here.
Pwilao is a bronze medallist (54kg) in the Youth World Women Boxing Championship held in Antalya, Turkey. She has won gold in the Youth Women National Boxing Championship in 2010 and 2011. She also won a bronze medal in the 34th National Games in Jharkhand.
The award comprises a one time grant of Rs 1 lakh and is awarded to promising and young sportspersons of the State. The award offered by the Dr Phani Sharma Welfare Trust, was formed with the aim of facilitating financial assistance to young players from the economically weaker sections of the State.
Presenting the award, Chief Minister Gogoi said the entire north-eastern region has tremendous potential in boxing as the boxers of this region performed excellently in London Olympics. He expressed his satisfaction over the selection of a women boxer for this award. Recalling Dr Phani Sharma’s contribution to the State, Gogoi revealed that following RG Baruah’s path, Sharma involved himself in developing the State in all respects.
State Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain, MLAs Capt Robin Bordoloi, Sushanta Buragohain, eminent journalist DN Bezbaruah, Director of Sports Gaurav Bothra, sports organiser Bhuban Lahkar and State boxing body secretary Hemanta Kumar Kalita also recalled Dr Sharma’s contribution to the State.
Dr Tanmoy Sharma, eldest son of Dr Phani Sharma welcomed the gathering and explained about the trust and motive behind the awarding financial assistance to promising sportspersons.
