Today around noon the arrested BPF MLA was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court, Kokrajhar and the CJM in-charge C Chaturvedi sent the accused MLA for seven days’ judicial custody rejecting the bail petition and a petition for police remand.
Meanwhile, the Kokrajhar district administration imposed an indefinite curfew since 5 am today and security measures were strictly tightened in the entire district.
On the other hand, despite curfew, hundreds of BPF supporters blocked the railway track at different places in Kokrajhar district from 8 am to 12 noon in protest against the arrest of the BPF MLA and demanded his unconditional release. As a result, the services of both up and down trains like Rajdhani Express, Capital Express, Brahmaputra Mail and others were totally disrupted for about 4-5 hours. However, the said trains were controlled at various stations of lower Assam and North Bengal. Later, the BPF protesters withdrew the rail blockade and instead called an indefinite Kokrajhar district bandh in protest against the arrest of the BPF MLA.
Meanwhile, MLA Brahma said at Kokrajhar Police Station that “a conspiracy has been made against me by AIUDF leader Ajmal” leading to his arrest. Several organizations have strongly condemned the arrest of the BPF MLA.
Talking to The Assam Tribune, SN Singh, IGP, BTAD, has said the MLA has been arrested on the basis of the police case registered at Dotma
Police Station and added that there are as many as seven criminal cases against him and these are not connected to the case being investigated by the CBI. It may be mentioned here that the situation in Kokrajhar is tense and the normal life has been disrupted by the present situation.
