BARPETA, Aug 20 - As the holy month of Bhadra in the Assamese calendar begins, entire Barpeta gets ready to observe the rituals related to the death anniversaries of the great Vaishnavite saints, Srimanta Sankaradeva and his trusted disciple Sri Sri Madhabadeva with full Satriya traditions. It commenced this year with the death anniversary of the founder of the Barpeta Satra Sri Sri Madhabadeva.
The 423rd death anniversary of the great Vaishnavite saint Sri Sri Madhabadeva was observed in different satras in Barpeta district. Barpeta, Ganakkuchi, Patbaushi, Sundaridia and Baradi Satra observed the day with full religious rituals and devotion.
In Barpeta Satra, established by the great saint himself, the anniversary is observed as Kirtan Mahotsava with a ten-day-long programme. Kirtan is erected on the altar of the Satra on the tenth day of the lunar fortnight and the religious rituals are performed from that day.
The main function of the Kirtan Mahotsava was observed today on the fifth day of the solar fortnight of the month of Bhadra. The entire Satra campus turned into a sea of humanity since morning to pay tributes to their pathfinder. Beginning with the morning prayer and followed by Sandhya Prasanga, the Satra was agog with the naam prasanga of the devotees all day long.
Bhojan Byabahar was performed after exhibition of Gurughat by the Gayan-Bayan of the Satra. Ghosha Kirtan and Byaha Kirtan were also performed in the afternoon. The most attractive ritual related with the Kirtan Mahotsava is the Karbhar which was offered this time by the devotees of Dakshinhati. Kanara Satra also offered Karbhar in Barpeta Satra today.
The devotees belonging to the Talukdar dynasty lit five lamps while the devotees of Dakshinhati lit one lamp in the evening. Parijat Haran was staged accompanied by Bardhemali, Ghoshadhemali by the Gayan-Bayan.
The Kirtan Mahotsava was also observed at Ganakkuchi, Sundaridia, Baradi and Patbaushi satras with same rituals. It was also observed at Karakuchi, Gomura, Kamarpara, Barpetaroad, Mayanbari Satra at Sarbhog and Jania.
