AIZAWL, Aug 20 - The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee today claimed credits for five Mizo traditional shawls and wraparounds getting Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) recently allotted GI tag to five Mizo traditional shawls, which the Congress claimed was an outcome of joint efforts of the state Art and Culture department and Science and Technology department since 2015 during the Congress government.
Mizoram Art and Culture director Hmingthanzuala said that the Centre has allotted GIs to five Mizo traditional shawls or wraparounds - Hmaram, Ngotekherh, Tawlhlohpuan, Pawndum and Mizo Puanchei. These shawls and wraparounds have cultural significance for the Mizos.
Hmingthanzuala said that the state Art and Culture department has applied for the GI tag for various Mizo traditional shawls since 2015.
