Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Aug 19 – The Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers, Srikant Jena today assured a delegation of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) that he would visit Assam immediately after the ongoing session of the Parliament to visit the Namrup Fertilizer unit and the site of the gas cracker project.

Member of Parliament Birendra Prasad Baishya and AGP general secretary Sarbananda Sonowal today met Jena in New Delhi and demanded immediate steps to modernize the Namrup fertilizer unit. Sonowal said that only one of the three plants of the unit are now functioning because of the failure of the Government to take effective steps for its modernization.

Sonowal said that the unit failed to cater to the needs of the farmers of the region and over the years, the Centre failed to take effective steps for the modernization of the plants.

The AGP delegation also expressed concern over the slow progress of the setting up of the gas cracker project and demanded that the Minister should visit the site to assess the situation on the ground.
