Half marathon to create awareness on drinking water

GUWAHATI, Aug 18 - IIT Guwahati will organise this year’s Guwahati Half Marathon on August 25, as part of its annual techno-management festival, Techniche, stated a press release. This year, the 11th edition of the Guwahati Half Marathon, aims to create awareness on the importance of clean and safe drinking water.

“There is a huge water shortage in various parts of the world, including India. In certain parts of the country, water is accessible but is contaminated with chemicals like arsenic and other impurities, rendering it undrinkable. This year, the Guwahati Half Marathon has partnered with Piramal Sarvajal to contribute towards the cause of cleaning water sources. For every registration, we will be contributing a certain amount of the registration fee towards building water ATMs,” said Suraj Shelke, convener of Techniche 2019.

The marathon will be divided into three events. The Spirit Run is an open-to-all 6-km race, where there is no age restriction, and anyone can participate. There would be separate categories and separate prize money for men and women. Registration is free of cost.

The Glory Run is the only 21-km race event in North East. Anyone above 14 years of age can participate, and the registration fee is Rs 400. There will be separate race categories and prizes for men and women. The Courage Run is a 6-km race for people with disability.

Schools and colleges can also participate for the General Championship trophy. The run would be in the Spirit Run category. The points would be counted on the basis of total participants and the number of participants ending up in the top 50.

One can register both online and offline. The online portal can be accessed from the website, The offline registration desks are available at Keventers at Srinagar, GS Road and Emperor China near the Assam State Zoo, the press release added.
