GUWAHATI, Aug 18 - The Kamrup Zila Journalist Association, a new branch of the Journalists’ Association of Assam (JAA), was set up today at a meeting held at Amingaon with JAA president DN Chakravartty in the chair.
Convener Sangram Das conveyed the purpose of the meeting, while Bhupen Goswami, general secretary of the JAA, stated the aims and objectives and constitutional formalities of the Journalists’ Association of Assam, affiliated to the National Union of Journalists of India (NUJI).
Goswami said that the NUJI is the only organisation of journalists in India, which is affiliated to the International Federation of Journalists, Brussels.
The meeting elected Munin Deka as president, Runu Ranjan Lahkar as vice president and Sangram Das as general secretary. Jiten Saikia, Gobinda Das and Dilip Das were elected organising secretary, publicity secretary and treasurer respectively.
The meeting expressed happiness at the decision of the Government of Assam to locate the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at North Guwahati due to its location as it would be a convenient place for the entire State from the communication point of view.
Chakravartty, in his presidential speech, remarked that journalists should not limit their activities only to their own welfare, but should dedicate themselves to the larger cause of the welfare of the people of the State. He said that it is to truth alone that the journalists should declare their eternal obedience.
