GUWAHATI, Aug 18 - Veteran actor Bholanath Kalita was honoured with the Natasurya Phani Sarma Award and noted theatre activist Dharani Barman was honoured with the Sahityacharya Atul Chandra Hazarika Award at a function held at Rabindra Bhawan here today.

The awards carrying a citation and Rs 1 lakh each and other gifts were presented by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. Gogoi said that the government was keen to preserve and promote the ideals of the illustrious sons of the soils so that the young generation can imbibe these values and participate in the process of building a progressive Assam.

Gogoi, while recalling the contributions of the stalwarts, said that the desired reforms can be ushered in through art, culture and literature, as these are the most effective media to build the bridge of unity and amity in a strife-torn society. “The need of the hour is to put to an end all conflicts and subversive activities and concentrate on building a greater Assam on the foundation of peace, love and unity,” stressed Gogoi.

On the other hand, acknowledging the honour conferred on him, Bholanath Kalita said that he really felt humbled at the moment. In his speech, Kalita remembered his association with Natasurya and said that the moments that he shared with the stalwart had made an impact on his life. It needs to be mentioned here that Kalita is a familiar name in the cultural arena. His acting prowess has impressed theatre lovers and he has also proved his histrionic skills on the silver screen. He is a good sportsperson too.

Dharani Barman could not address the gathering on account of his ill health. Barman, apart from acting, has been involved in promoting the theatre movement in the state with emphasis on popularising quality plays.

The function was attended by many dignitaries, including Minister of Cultural Affairs Bismita Gogoi.

Earlier, floral tributes were offered by the dignitaries before the portraits of Natasurya Phani Sarma and Sahityacharya Atul Chandra Hazarika.
