New catfish discovered

 IMPHAL, Aug 13 - A team of scientists has discovered a new catfish in the Sinkin and Dibang rivers of Lower Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh.

The scientists from the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Imphal, Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar, College of Fisheries, Agartala, and Manipur University, Canchipur, discovered the new fish species.

The new dark brown finger-sized catfish species has been named Mystus prabini in memory of late Prabin Kumar Mahanta, ex-Director, Directorate of Cold Water Fisheries Research, Bhimtal, Dr Achom Darshan, a member of the scientists’ team, stated.

Dr Darshan said that the catfish is a new species, which has been confirmed after DNA barcoding. There are around 46 species of Mystus catfish in the world, of which 21 are available in India, he added.
