|Centre admits forest cover loss in NE|
NEW DELHI, Aug 12 – Denying rampant destruction of forests in the Northeast, the Centre admitted that there was a reduction of 548 sq km of forest cover in comparison to the findings of the India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2009.
In Assam, the decrease has been attributed to illegal felling, encroachments in insurgency-affected areas and shifting cultivation practices, whereas, in the other Northeastern States, except Sikkim, the decrease is due to shortening of shifting cultivation cycle and biotic pressure. This was stated by Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister of State for Environment and Forests, in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.
The minister further stated that there is no proposal to depute a high-level team to verify reduction in forest cover in the Northeast.
