BADARPUR, Aug 10 - The Karimganj district administration has imposed Section 144 CrPC in the district, following an incident of ‘communal violence’ between two groups on Sunday evening at the Karimganj District Library Auditorium Hall, where the ‘World Friendship Day’ cultural functions were going on
District administration sources informed this correspondent that the situation is now fully under control. CRPF and other security forces have been deployed in Karimganj town.
Official sources informed that on Sunday evening, in the Karimganj District Library Auditorium Hall, a cultural organisation Sristi arranged a programme there, on the occasion of ‘World Friendship Day’. Immediately after the programme began, two unknown persons, one from ‘Kanishail’ and another from Karimganj Settlement Road, came hall and created some problems, leading to protests by the local people who severely beat them up. Immediately after the news spread, within a short time, a huge mob attacked the hall and created untoward incidents inside.
Immediately after getting this report, the Karimganj SP, Pradeep Ranjan Kar along with a CRPF team rushed to the spot and lathicharged the agitated mob, and within a few minutes, brought the situation under control. Immediately thereafter, two persons were attacked by some agitating people, near the Karimganj Old Petrol Pump, and some bikes were burnt down. The police rushed to the spot and rescued the injured persons from the mob. Meanwhile, a huge mob from Kanishail blocked the National Highway at midnight and damaged many vehicles. This mob also pelted stones on the police vehicles, which had reached the spot. The district administration and the police then imposed Section 144 CrPc in the entire district, for an indefinite period, until further orders.
Talking to the this correspondent, the Karimganj Deputy Commissioner MK Deka informed that “the entire situation is completely normal and under control. For maintaining peace, discipline and communal harmony in the district, and to avoid any sort of communal violence, we are keeping a keen watch on the situation. Already Section 144 Crpc has been imposed. The District Police administration has been asked to immediately arrest the accused persons, who created communal disturbance in the district. On behalf of the administration, we have also earnestly appealed to the people to avoid giving credence to ‘rumours’, and not to take law in their own hands”.
