No decision yet on NEC’s future

NEW DELHI, Aug 10 - The Centre has not taken any decision to convert the North Eastern Council (NEC) into a regional planning body.

Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley said in the Rajya Sabha in reply to a question by Bhubaneswar Kalita that the Government of India has not taken any decision in this regard.

Earlier, Kalita said that for the development of the North Eastern Region, the NEC was created with direct funding from the Planning Commission. “We understand from reports that the Government is thinking of making the NEC a regional planning body,” he said.

The aim of the NEC was to develop the North Eastern States. If it is reduced to regional planning body, the purpose will be defeated and the NE will suffer financially. Ï would like to ask the Minister whether they are going to keep it as a North East Development and Planning Council,” Kalita said.
