Security tightened in North Assam districts
Correspondent
TEZPUR, Aug 9 - Security has been beefed up in four districts of Northern Assam viz., Sonitpur, Biswanath, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji alongwith the Assam-Arunachal border areas just ahead of the Independence Day.

DIG (Police) for the Northern Range Lachit Baruah said that the law-and-order situation is being strictly monitored in this belt as minute to minute intelligence reports are being received. “Earlier, these four districts, besides the Assam-Arunachal border areas were used as a hotbed by the insurgent groups. Now it is under control,” he said that presently there is no threat from any militant group.

When asked about growing jehadi activity in the region, he claimed that no such activity has been noticed in this belt at the moment. However, he mentioned that a few cadres belonging to the Songbijit faction of the NDFB, who are reportedly taking shelter in Assam-Arunachal border area in Biswanath and Sonitpur districts are yet to come to the mainstream. “We are hopeful that they will soon come back to the mainstream.” He added that SPs of the four districts have been instructed to keep strict vigil and ensure security to the common citizens of their concerned districts.
