JORHAT, Aug 9 - The Jorhat unit of AASU today burnt an effigy symbolising the State Power department to protest against erratic power supply in the district in recent times.
Activists of the students’ body staged the protest in front of the Jorhat Deputy Commissioner’s office besides AT Road shouting slogans against the Government.
The protesters alleged that the APDCL has been carrying out power cuts for long hours in the guise of repairing and maintenance work without issuing any prior notice to the consumers thereby causing a lot of suffering to the people at time when the temperature was soaring.
“Businessmen, housewives, students, elders, children, medical patients, all sections of people, were suffering during the ongoing heat wave due to power cuts of over eight to nine hours daily since over a fortnight ago,” the general secretary, AASU, Jorhat district unit, Jitu Neog said.
Neog slammed the State Government for its failure to provide power supply in a regular manner and reminded that the BJP on the eve of Assembly polls had promised 24 hours uninterrupted power supply.
Bijoy Shankar Bordoloi, advisor of Jorhat regional unit of the AASU, said that there were complaints against employees of the APDCL for not receiving calls by consumers at the designated complaint phone number during the day as well night time.
