Correspondent
IMPHAL, Aug 8 - The 12-hour bandh called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) in Thangmeiband area of Imphal West district today to protest against the death of a schoolgirl affected normal life in Thangmeiband and other commercial areas here.

Most roads in and around Thangmeiband area wore a deserted look during the bandh. Shops and other business establishments in the area, including those in the busy Thangal Bazar, also remained closed.

Though no major untoward incident was reported during the bandh, some localities of Thangmeiband reportedly witnessed confrontations between the police and bandh supporters.

There were reports of two students sustaining injuries in police action when a group of students of Churachand Higher Secondary School in Imphal East district and Model School Tera in Imphal West district tried to stage two separate protests, demanding justice for the dead schoolgirl.

A resident of Thangemeiband, the class VII student of a private school, was found dead inside the school hostel on July 18. Meanwhile, the JAC has called a Statewide bandh tomorrow, a press release stated.
