DIMAPUR, Aug 6 - MLA Sharingain Longkumer of the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party was elected unopposed as the Deputy Speaker of the Nagaland Assembly in the fourth session of the Nagaland Assembly which got under way today.
Election for the Deputy Speaker’s post was necessitated following the resignation of Zhaleo Rio. The Opposition NPF did not field any candidate for the post.
A lawyer by profession, 37-year-old Longkumer from Ungma village in Mokokchung district won the by-election to the Aolenden Assembly constituency recently.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Leader of Opposition TR Zeliang congratulated Longkumer on his election. Both the leaders described him as young and energetic with requisite qualifications to hold such a coveted post. They urged him to discharge his duties and responsibilities to the best of his abilities without fear or favour.
Meanwhile, on the first day of the three-day session, the Assembly discussed the Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland and the Inner Line Permit issues.
