|200 schools still under water in Barpeta|
BARPETA, Aug 4 - The recent floods have damaged the backbone of educational infrastructure in Barpeta district affecting more than 800 schools. Although it has subsided in many areas, 200 schools are still under water and classes have not commenced though three days have passed since the reopening of summer vacation. Normal activities in these schools are surely to be delayed as the premises and approach roads will take a few days to dry. Most of such schools are known to be located in char areas of the district while a few are in the riverine southern parts.
The most significant aspect of the flood devastation is that as many as 13 schools have been eroded by Brahmaputra and Beki rivers. Out of these 13, 12 belong to Mandia Educational Block, the worst affected area by flood and erosion. 1077 no. Sapari LP, 1879 Baseruddin Gaoburha LP, Garalasuti LP, Garala Sat LP, 1635 no. Pachim Mayanbari LP, Pachim Mayanbari ME Girls Madrassa, 969 Kismat Mayanbari Dhakaliapara LP, 1659 no. Matharanga KalpaniLP, 1965 no. Uzirar Char Bhangi Khowa LP Bhabarpar LP, Sayedpur LP and Sasmina LP Schools under Mandia Education Block have been eroded this year. These school will have to run academic activities in makeshift temporary sheds until permanent structures are built. Twenty-one school buildings were eroded in this area in 2014 also.
On the other hand, as many as 63 high and higher secondary schools all over the district have been affected by floods this year. According to information, normal activity has not been possible in eight high schools under Chenga, nine under Baghbar, six under Kalgachia and five under Sarthebari Revenue Circles. It will take another few days to commence academic activities in these schools.
Besides Kammarpara High Madrassa under Kalgachia Revenue Circle has been eroded by Beki making it necessary to shift to some safer place.
Besides, a large number of school children have to take shelter either in relief camps or on embankments after losing their homes in erosion foretelling a bleak future for them.
